Wednesday Night Training

Basically the same as the Tuesday night training rides were, but on a Wednesday. It’s the same route every week (Skipton to Buckden and back), total of 36 miles. Meet at 6:30PM outside Dave Ferguson Cycles. Pace will be approx 20mph, so we should be back for 8:30.

We’ll aim stay together on the way out, but pace will be high, so you’ll need to be able to hold a high speed (think 18mph on a solo ride). The way back will be a chaingang from Buckden all the way back with the pace gradually increasing up to full pace coming out of Rylestone.

A few rules:

  1. Back off on the climbs! The ride won’t work if you pull on the climbs, weaker riders will lose your wheel and end up in the wind with no chance of catching up.
  2. Hold a wheel. At times you’ll need to push very hard to get on a wheel. It will hurt, but whatever happens don’t lose the wheel in front of you. Once you’re on a wheel it will get easier, in the wind it will only get harder. It’s worth the effort.
  3. Point out potholes. When riding close at 20mph you won’t get any chance to see a pothole or load of gravel on the road. If you’re on the front you are the eyes of the group. Point out any potholes or other surface imperfections (shout “big hole” or “gravel” if needed).
  4. Don’t worry if you get dropped. Everyone gets dropped at some time or another. If you’re dropped on the way out, spin for a bit, turn around and jump on a wheel when the bunch comes passed on the way back. If you’re dropped on the way back, just follow the road back to Skipton, meet back at Dave‘s after the ride. Either way, don’t worry, you’ll get fitter, faster and more used to holding the wheel in front. Soon you won’t be dropped!
  5. Keep it tight. You should be able to put your arm round the rider beside you and spit on the rider in front. It’s a wide road so we won’t be lining out.
  6. Don’t overlap wheels. The road is full of holes and covered in puddles. Riders often have to move out quickly. If you’re overlapping their rear wheel, they’ll take you out when they move and we’ll all be in a heap on the floor.
  7. It’s not a race. There will be a final sprint up to the Craven Heifer coming into Skipton, but other than that, keep the pace up but don’t attack.

Youth riders welcome. You will need your parents consent, and if you are under 16, you will need to be accompanied by a nominated adult club member to be responsible for you for the duration of the ride. See Youth Membership for more details.

New Saturday meeting point

Albion Place

Back on the 26th of March, I sent out a proposal for a change of meeting point. I’ve received quite a bit of feedback, here is a sample:

Would endorse change, as I think it,s only a matter of time before an accident occurs @ Dave,s, and I think we are seen as a bit of a nuisance to shoppers and general public. Not good for club image.

We have definitely outgrown the available space

We are causing a lot of congestion which can result in a bad image of the club

I think it is a great idea to change the meeting point to Albion Place- this looks like it was designed as a meeting place/amphitheater and since the powers that be have provided such a good spot it is a shame not to use it.

Albion place has cycle stands and is sheltered more than the place on Rope Walk

I’ve spoken to many other members, the only negative raised by a few people was:

We’ve always met there and I don’t see the need to change it

…which is totally valid. Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings even, no-one is about.

So, initially we’re going to change the Saturday meeting points only. All Saturday rides will now be advertised as meeting at Albion Place. Access Albion place via Jerry Croft (turn left before Cotswolds). There is vehicular access, so you do not need to dismount unless you wish to (although watch the dropped curb).

Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday evening and Sunday rides will continue to meet at Dave Ferguson Cycles.

Note: This consultation has been done via email to ensure all get an equal say, and to be as inclusive of the membership as possible. With such a fundamental decision, I (and the rest of the committee) thought the club meetings did not attract a wide enough audience.

Tuesday night training rides

Get Back In The Saddle (GBITS) is back!

Not been out on your bike for ages? Need just the thing to get you back into it?

The ever successful GBITS is back for 2015 starting with 4 rides, one every week from 21st March 2015.

All you need is:

  • a roadworthy bike (road, mountain or tourer, either will be fine)
  • a helmet
  • a spare tube for your bike (just in case)
  • a bit of money for the café stop

We will lead, encourage and support you on your ride whether you’re a beginner or returner to cycling.

Meet at the Craven Pool, Aireville Park every Saturday @ 9:30am March 21st and 28th, April 4th and 11th.

SCC Team Entry for Ride London 100

Team entries for the Prudential Ride London Club Challenge are now open. There’s not much time to get our team entries in, entries close at 17:00 on Monday 23 March. Simon Lerpiniere (club secretary) will be co-coordinating the club team entries (club entries must all be coordinated by 1 person). Event is on the 2nd August in London, 100 miles on closed roads with feed stations and all the bells and whistles you would expect.

We had a team entry in for 2014, so we’re guaranteed at least 1 team entry for 2015. Team entries can be mixed (2 men and 2 women), 4 men, or 4 women. Team must be of 4 members and all team members must attend for the entry to be valid. You must be a British Cycling member to enter.

So… meet up with your riding buddies, chat about it on facebook, work out who wants to ride and put together a team. Email the team details (each member’s full name) to simonl@skiptoncyclingclub.org.uk by Friday 20th March.

We’ll find out about our club entries on 30th March. Entry costs £58 per person (payable after the 30th March). Each team member must fill out the entry form and pay online by 17th of April (or the whole team lose it’s place).

You’ll all be responsible for coordinating your own transport and accommodation.

Skipton Reliability Ride – Sunday 1st March 2015

This Sunday (1st March 2015) is the Skipton Reliability ride, starting from Carleton Village Hall. The event is organised and run by Craven District council.

Very similar to the Otley reliability ride in structure. There is a route, a start point and time, a load of riders and you need to find your own way round the route and back to the start. The whole point is to prove (to yourself) that you and your bike are reliable. It’s not a race, or a group ride, but you’re welcome to ride it with your friends and it should be a great day out.

There is 2 routes, a 30 mile route (map) and a 60 mile route (map). Time limit on the 30 mile is 3 hours and 4.5 hours on the 60.

It’s £5 entry (sign on the day only 9am to 9.45am) and there is food to buy at the finish.

Sunday Steady 50 – 7th December

This Sunday is the first of 4 Steady Sunday rides. It’s a monthly 50-ish mile ride, run on a Sunday, meeting at 9am outside Dave Ferguson Cycles in Skipton.

Average speed is between the Saturday Social rides and the Sunday Sport rides, about 14-15mph. No-one will get dropped and we’ll regroup at the top of hills and major junctions.

This month’s route is Norwood Edge and back (45 miles). 1 major climb (Norwood Edge) and nice, quiet backroads the whole way. Café stop at Bean Loved in Skipton after the ride.

Social Series Report (28th June) – Stainforth via Halton Gill

Today’s riders all set off from Dave’s shop as usual, the group was 12 strong but smaller than of late. This, we assumed, was down to the fact that there was something called ‘The White Rose Classic’ going on and some of our regular riders were taking part.

Anyway, we made our way along Grassington Road to Linton at some pace! We collected a rogue cyclist along the way too, who just happened to know exactly where to join us because of our excellent ride planning (pat on the back to self), so then there were 13 of us.

We continued up to Grassington and down the Grass Woods road to Coniston where we turned off to Kilnsey. The Crag looked spectacular against the moody skies, with climbers dotted around like colourful spiders.

Onwards and upwards we travelled, turning off to Arncliffe. I fell behind a bit on this road and the others became a speck in the distance. Then, all of a sudden, Gareth Evans appeared like Mr Ben (70s kids TV reference). Apparently I wasn’t the back marker, he and John Cahill had been nattering and it had slowed them down. We all got to Arncliffe and stuffed bananas and flapjack etc. down our necks and watched a couple of vintage tractors pass by, before riding up to Halton Gill and the climb up to Pen-y-ghent.

The views on this ride are amazing, even on a cloudy day. We live in such a beautiful part of the world, we are so lucky that we have hills to ride up in order to see such beauty. Then, you get to ride like the wind down the other side. Bonus!

After debating whether to visit Stainforth Foss we decided to leave it for a warmer day as it was too chilly to paddle and we needed our lunch. Off to Settle with instructions to turn left out of Langcliffe and along the High Road to Constitution Hill, we lost 2 of our boys. They rushed ahead and missed the turn. ‘Oh well, they’ll find us’ I said, and they did, although not until they’d done a tour of Langcliffe looking for us! 

The Settle Down café was busy with cyclists from Southport, they were doing an Audax and said they would complete a route over 200k by the time they got home. I pretended not to be surprised by that and wished them well. They were asking about where the best place to view Le Tour would be as they were staying in Skipton next weekend to watch. We suggested somewhere up Buckden way!

The excellent waitress service at the café was top notch again, there’s enough tea in those pots to sink a ship!

After refuelling, off we went up the cobbled street to start the climb up Attermire towards Airton. Phew! Not recommended on a full stomach! One or two dismounted, as it is hard to get going again if you stop, but we all made it up there without revisiting our lunch.

Glorious decent into Airton and over the river bridge up towards Winterburn. We turned right here to Eshton and through to Gargrave. The final hills and swoops down into Broughton are always a good sign that you’re on your way home and a quick sprint along the main road to Carleton, where we all managed to get across the junction at the same time! We waved goodbye to 2 more riders at Carleton as they were heading home to Cononley and we all went back towards town.

There’s always one motorist who wants to put a downer on the day and we met him in town. He was quite abusive, but we put his bad mood down to owning a brown car, overtook him and got out of his way. After all, Bean Loved was calling and we had earned ourselves a proper coffee! 

Lots of climbing, lots of banter and lots of views.

Social Series – Saturday 28th June

This week’s Social Series Saturday ride is going to be full of views!

You will see Pen-y-ghent close up and we are going to visit Stainforth Foss too, over a very small bridge – we may need to dismount!

As usual we will meet at DF’s bike shop at 9.30am. All welcome, just choose your ride!
